Over the course of the next month, L's condition got worse. Light began to wonder whether Ryuk had said that back then just to make them stop worrying.Light had scarcely left L's side all month. It was costing millions of dollars to keep L's heart beating, so Light had set up a website. www.keepLalive.com. Every time the website is visited, a dollar and fifteen cents is taken from the visitor's tax money. Every time an ad on the website is clicked on, that company donates $ 2.00
Not to mention there were the donations made by the countless people L had helped in the past. And with over 3,000,000,000 viewings a day, it added up fast.
"You'll be fine, L." Light reassured him.
But L was't just fine. In the next month, the hospital had to revive L three times and there wasn't a day that L could sit up. Light even limited his bathroom breaks to once a day because it hurt him so much; leaving L's side. It killed him; leaving his side for even a moment.
L was getting weaker and weaker every day. Soon, Matsuda, Aizawa, Mogi, Misa and even Light's dad all stopped visiting other than to bring Light REAL food once a week.
While going through his groceries one day, Light noticed a small plastic container filled with strawberries. He smiled and took one out. Using his pocketknife, he cut the strawberries into small bite-sized cubes.
Sowly, he fed the small fruits to L. He was still half asleep, so Light had to do most of the work. It pained him to see L barely able to chew a block of fruit scarcely bigger than a dime. He stroked L's head lovingly and whispered words of comfort to him. L couldn't really understand what Light was saying, but it was soothing to hear the garbled murmur of his voice.
L's heart almost stopped the next day. Light was quickly ushered out of the room while the medics ran in to do all they could to keep him alive. Light sat on a bench and held his head in his hands. He teared silently, wiping away the wetness with his sleeve and trying to appear brave. When one of the doctors came out with a look of sorrow and woe writ on his face, Light could only suspect the worse.
"Is...is he...is Ryuzaki going to be okay?" Light asked. "Please tell me he's okay!"
"He's okay...for now." The doctor said. "We were able to regulate his body again, but next time we may not be so lucky. We're losing him, fast. All you're doing is dragging out his pain."
"I don't care!" Light said. "I will do anything to get my Ryuzaki back!"
He froze. He had just called Ryuzaki "his." Like they were lovers or something. The thought overwhelmed Light and he pushed past the doctors into the room. He sat next to L and squeezed his hand.
"L, if you can hear me at all, make some sign that you can." Light said.
He waited and watched all of L's movements. He felt L's fingers twitch in his palm. He had heard.
"L, I need you to tell me what you need. What can I do for you to make you better?" Light asked.
"...S...str....straw...b-berries..." L breathed.
Light smiled. It was his favorite after all. It was what he wanted and Light wasn't going to object. He flipped open his cell phone and dialed his dad.
"Hello?"
"Dad, I need you to run to the store and buy a few cartons of strawberries and bring them here. See you soon." Light said and hung up.
He resumed holding L's still hand. Mr. Yagami was confused, but his son was smart so he went to the store, bought load of strawberries and brought them to the hospital.
"I don't know why you need them, but here they are." Light's dad said before taking off again.
Light cut up the strawberries and slowly fed them to him. Over the course of the next week, L seemed to perk up a bit. By Saturday, he could actually open his eyes.
-Are strawberries liek his medicine?- Light wondered as he called his dad and told him to bring more strawberries.
All month, Light fed L the little strawberry cubes. Four weeks later he could sit up in bed.
"I'm so proud of you." Light said one day and unexpectedly flung his arms tighly around L's now frail body.
"L-Light?!" L stammeed, turning as pink as the tacky hospital curtains hung in his window.
By the next month, L was finally out of the hospital. The news of his big release was all over the news and Light and L had to dress up as an old person couple to get out of the hospital and escape paparazi.
Light surprised L with a brand new white shirt and dark jeans. After all, the old ones were stained brown with blood.
"It's good to be out of there." L said. "...Hey Light, wanna do something?"
"What do you mean, Ryuzaki?" Light asked.
"I mean DO something. Those few months in the hospital made me realize how fragile life is and how quickly you can lose it. So let's do something today; because for all we know we may die tomorow."
-Twelve more years- Light thought. -You take life by the horns, L. You live your life to the fullest-
"Okay, Ryuzaki. Let's 'do something.' What sort of something do you have in mind?" Light asked.
"Follow me." L said and grabbed Light's hand. Light just smiled and followed. L brought him to a fair. They played games, kissed a dolphin and ate cotton candy. They even went in a haunted house.
"Come on Light-kun, over here!" L pulled Light towards a carboard cut-out and stuck his head through the hole. Light reluctantly put his head through the other hole. Their picture was flashed and Light realized that he had been a blonde girl in a spotted bikini sitting on the buff tan lifeguard arm of Ryuzaki.
"Alright, my turn now." Light said, buying cotton candy for the two of them. "Let's go on the ferris wheel."
"Aw, but Light, the ferris wheel is BORING!" L whined.
"You can manage for ten minutes." Light pushed L into the line with him.
They were loaded next to eachother on one of the little seats. The ferris wheel started to move and L shifted into his signiture sitting position. Light's heart fluttered as he saw L teeter a little bit when the ferris wheel picked up speed.
"It's kind of dangerous to sit like that on a ferris wheel, Ryuzaki." Light said nervously. "Maybe you should sit down normal."
"There's a bar there!" L said. "It's perfectly safe."
But just as he said that, the wheel lurched and sent L toppling over the bar. Lght with his quick reflexes grabbed the back of L's shirt and yanked him back onto the seat, landing him right on Light's chest.
"Will you sit normaly now, you big dunderhead?" Light asked.
"Yeah...thanks for saving me." L blushed and sat normally on the seat.
"Hey. First reflexes. What can I say? I just moved." Light said.
After they got off the ferris wheel, L dragged Light to a dunk tank.
"I want to sit on teh seat first!" L said. "You try to dunk me!"
He scrambled onto the little hinged seat when it was his turn and stuck his tongue out at Light. the first two tries, Light missed.
"Ha ha! You throw like a girl!" L taunted.
That did it. Light threw the ball straight and hard and it smacked the target dead center, dumping L into the tank of water. L stood up and spit waer out of his mouth like a fountain.
"Ha! Bullseye!" Light said.
"Your turn." L smirked.
Light pulled towards the silly games. They tossed rings onto bottle necks, golf balls into glasses and balls to knock over cup pyramids. At one vendor, Light won a stuffed penguin that was as tall as he was. he held it in front of him.
"Nice penguin." L laughed.
"Shut up." Light grumbled.
"No, it's cute!"
"I said shut up!"
While walking past a fenced area, Light noticed a mechanical bull. A tall burly man ws thrown from its back onto the squishy brown mats.
"Ooh, I want to try!" L said.
"You'll be killed, shorty!" a man chortled. "Even Big Willy couldn't stay on, and he's three times your size!"
"I think I can do it." L said.
"Ryuzaki, don't do this." Light hissed. "I don't need you getting hurt the day you got out of the hospital."
"I can do this, Light." L said.
"Ha!" the man laughed. "If you can stay on that bull for ten seconds, I'll pay you fifty thousand yen!" (about 50 dollars)
"Ha yourself. I just made an easy 50 bucks!" L walked into the arena.
All eyes were turned to him. The scrawny little wanabe cowboy didn't stand a chance. He climbed onto the back of the bull and held on tight with his right hand. The bull began to rock and buck slowly, but it picked up speed and bucked like mad. L held fast and whooped and hollered. People standing all around the fence cheered and clapped. L was finally thrown off forty-three seconds later.
"Thankyou!" L said and grabbed the cash out of the man's hand.
All in all, it was a great night. L was exhausted because pf his run-in with the bull, so when he fell asleep in the cab, Light carried him bridal style into the building and laid him on the couch.
"Good night, Ryuzaki-chan." Light whispered. "See you in te morning."
He leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on L's forehead.
